I was just wondering If buying a new 1GB stick to add to the 512MB would make Gaming Faster on my PC especially for C&C Generals Zero Hour
I have a
ASRock P4i65G motherboard
Intel Pentuim 4 2.40Ghz Overclocked to 2.82Ghz
512MB RAM DDR333

I'm not a hardware specialist but I guess it would ... I'm not sure which operating system you are using but 512MB RAM is rather little these days (my previous laptop used to have 256MB and I barely could do anything with it). Unless you've got a dual core, don't try going over 4GB RAM though (your computer won't be able to go over that limit).

Yes!! 512MB is nothing!! 1GB is okay, but I think 2GB+ would be sufficient in running quicker processor for gaming and all other needs.

No, the only way to make computer faster in this case is to increase the speed of your RAM.You could add another 1000GB of RAM. If it's running at the same speed as your old set, your comp will not seem any faster.

The higher memory you have, the faster your computer performance is, as I have experienced, most of graphical apps consume too much memory, so it makes the multi-tasking slower, and the speed of processing data slower, then when I upgrade my system to 4 GB Ram and made the processor to core i5, wow, it performs well. It doesn't give me headache anymore.

Yes it will speed up your pc . But make sure you only double your ram . If you have 256mb ram , make it 1 Gb . If 1 Gb , then make it 2 gb .

Re: Will Buying New RAM make my pc faster?

Well, since this is a CS forum, then a CS answer seems appropriate?

The speed of your computer is determined by the speed of memory accesses: Most computers end up going slowly because they exceed their fast memory resources, and end up using hard disk accesses to load the data they need. The key to a fast computer is the memory hierarchy. The first level of this is your cache. This is very very fast memory close to your processor. The next level is the ram, and the final level is the HDD. The speed of your HDD is on the order of one million times slower to access than your cache. Thus the more data you can have at the higher levels, the faster your computer. If, when running a program, you constantly have to access the HDD, then you will grind to a halt.

Thus, adding RAM may not make your computer faster: it depends whether or not you are using all of it under normal use. If you are not, then increasing memory speed, or cache size will make your machine run faster. Of course... if you only have 512, it is very likely that you are filling this storage up.

- I have simplified this a lot, as data locality can have a lot to do with the performance of your programs (and this is not necessarily solved by size of a given level, but may be entirely dependent on the speed of the slowest level).

Definitely RAM increase the speed of computer,1 GB RAM is enough but depending application and software you used RAM needed, according to size and volume of software you used you select the RAM if you used more programs with more storage then you have to select 2 or more GB of RAM.
