I need to transfer my whole user file from the familly computer to my new computer. When I try to do this the computer informs me that the action cannot happen because the file "ntuser.dat" is open in system. I am about to smash my computer.

Same guy posting. I'm not familliar with this stuff in much depth at all. Here's what I can tell you about the situation: All other users are closed and have no programs running. I've checked processes in task manager and can't see ntuser.dat in there. |

Although you can do this, it doesn't make much sense. Each user has their own file of this name (containing various settings). Why would you want to overwrite the entire existing file on the target computer? That might cause problems. You can transfer individual settings if you know how to identify them, and if there aren't too many.

Skipjack's right ... I would even worry that transferring the user file wouldn't transfer all the required configurations (after all, do you know exactly which parameters are recorded within ntuser.dat ?)
