Re: confusing multiple choice questions.

To process client requests for web pages ... the proxy will fetch the web page for you and will send you back (to the client) the http data. The advantage being that your IP is not being displayed but instead the IP address of the proxy. Anoter advantage is that the proxy can help you bypass some internet censorship (because rather than sending an http request directly to some blocked material, you are querying the proxy (which is maybe not blocked) and he's doing the http query for you and sends you béack the http data).

Re: confusing multiple choice questions.

I forgot an important precision: oftentimes people will "chain" their proxies in order to anonimize their internet connection. This is the principle of "onion networks" such as the (open source) Tor Network, which is a P2P network allowing very long chain proxies to its users (you can just use the network or set up your computer as a Tor relay as well ...).
Sabu, the fallen head of the Anonymous movement, used to send his connections via the Tor network. He was busted the day he forgot to do so and sent his http requests with his own IP ...

Indeed a proxy might help you monitor the security better. You can have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_serverthis webpage about proxy servers in order to get a more exhaustive list of proxy uses.

Re: confusing multiple choice questions.

I wouldn't be able to say for sure ... a proxy server both serves webpages (i.e. handle users' http requests) and is a good way to control incoming http requests. Wikipedia lists the following uses of a proxy server:

Filtering
Caching
DNS proxy
Bypassing filters and censorship
Logging and eavesdropping
Gateways to private networks
Accessing services anonymously

As you can see it's more about processing client requests than preventing unauthorized users from coming in (filtering and gateways to private networks serve that purpose)
