USB 3.0

With USB 3.0, since it's 10 times faster than 2.0, would that mean an external hard drive would be quicker than an internal hard drive?

Re: USB 3.0

It sounds very exciting ... I wasn't aware of the USB 3.0 coming up that soon (seems like the mass-production of external hard drives using the USB 3.0 standard will begin in 2010, along with that of webcams; in the following article (http://www.pcworld.com/article/17275...es_usb_30.html) they even write that data compression won't be necessary anymore in order to transfer the data from the webcam to the computer, which will greatly improve the quality of the video. USB 2.0 was already good but definitely a little slow for large data transfers (>10Gb). Now with a factor 10 speed increase it seems like the boundary will be pushed far away ...

Re: USB 3.0

it is wonderful that usb 3.0 is much faster than that of 2.0.
to sme extentthe external harware could bring faster operation speed than the internal hardware.

Re: USB 3.0

I believe internal hard drives and other internal hardware will have improved speed as well

Is it the software version or hardware version?

Re: USB 3.0

I believe this is a hardware issue as well as a software one ... (just like for USB 2.0; there are USB 1.0 cables which cannot support the USB 2.0 protocol).

Re: USB 3.0

USB 3.0 has a higher transfer rates (up to 4.8 Gbps) it also increase maximum bus power and increased device current draw to better accommodate power-hungry devices.

Guys, I saw an ad for a USB 3 external hard drive a couple of days ago in the subway ... has anyone already invested in these ? Are they reallty that fast ? (note that it's been more than a year after the OP first posted about USB 3)

Re: USB 3.0

Hey,

do you know whether the new 6TB external hard drives (see here) work with USB 3.0? I think they are combined in one case so there must be several 2TB hard drives. Am I right? Are such big hard drives as fast as normal external drives? What is the greatest hard drive capacity?

Re: USB 3.0

Every hard drive works with USB3.0, it's just some of them won't allow you to benefit from the USB3.0 speed. In order to find out whether these hard drives are USB3.0 compatible, maybe you should google them and check more detailed technical specifications.

Re: USB 3.0

Hello,

USB 3.0 has been around for a while already ... however I am not sure whether most computers (PCs and laptops) fully support USB 3.0 yet (most support USB 2.0 though ...). As written in Wikipedia (at http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus), USB 3.0 started to appear in public products in 2010.
