Securing user passwords

Hello everyone

I've been developing a platform which requires users to create a password-protected account.
I found that hashing the password (using sha512) was probably the most appropriate way to secure them; however, I decided to slow down the authentication algorithm by adding a few random digits at the end of a user password before hashing it (so that in order to authenticate, one would need enough attempts so that the authentication process would take long enough to make it difficult to crack using rainbow tables; this is in addition to using a traditional salt in order to make the use of well-known pre-computed rainbow tables useless).
My question was: are there other security steps I can take in order to render the authentication process even more secure ? Such as pushing a part of that process client-side (with javascript), encrypting the authentication traffic via SSL, ... Is there any computer literature on that topic ?

Re: Securing user passwords

These are used for ws-security. what I am looking for is, storing user id password securely in database(encrytped), so that any human select on to the tables shouldn't be able to read the user id password.
