(Just a note to everyone else: His sanity seems to be slipping somewhat, but other than that he's the same as he was on the math forum. Just for the record, he won't be able to see this part of my post, because I recited a magic spell over the thing that only allows people who are not named Charles R. Greathouse to read the text contained within these parentheses. I'm so clever, aren't I? :mrgreen
An independent review of this post mentioned today that I was in danger of ending up with mental health problems, with potential difficulties such as illusions of possessing unusual abilities, etc. I'm sure I don't know what they meant, but I think I'll go on a diet of mixed calculus problems anyway, just to be safe. :|

Re: Introduce yourself!

Welcome -- or something, since I've already seen you over at mymathforum.

What kinds of fantasy lit? I've read a fair bit, though I must say I prefer the old masters Dunsainy and Tolkien to the new ones like Leiber.

Where have you traveled to?

Well there's Tolkien of course, but then there are others
Steven Erikson - A Tale of the Malazan book of the Fallen
George Martin - A song of ice and fire
Scott Lynch - Gentlemen Bastards trilogy
to name a few

As for my travels i've been to : Turkey, Italy, Germany, France, Cuba and in 2 days i'm visiting Egypt and then in Easter we have arranged a 20-days trip to England, Scotland and Ireland with my friends

Thanks for the welcome

The MS DOS stuff counts for a lot, actually -- it's very helpful to have that mindset & ability. I don't see many people these days with background in DOS.

HTML, on the other hand, won't help you pick up programming. It's good to know -- it's a reasonable output format, and of course you can write or maintain your own web pages -- but batch programming has more in common with Java than HTML, IMO.

What are your other interests? Sometimes it's good if you can write programs that do things that interest you when you're learning -- less tiresome that way. If you like music, maybe you can make a program to track artists and songs (building in I/O and a nice interface as you learn those features); if you like games, write your own (starting out simple, slowly including graphics and more advanced logic); if you're studying business, make a model of a company (costs, sales, various kinds of inputs, wages, etc.); if you like math, write programs on that (finding primes, testing numbers to see if they're squares, find combinations, etc.); and so forth. I mean, if you have to be programming you might as well make something cool, right?

Re: Introduce yourself!

Welcome!

There isn't much on Java on this site, but as long as you're not asking for help filtering through Java API, I'm sure I can answer any question you have. If you do have API questions, ask anyway, and we'll see what we can do.

Also, CRGs advice is really, really good.

Welcome to mycomputerforum.com, xr64d! We are glad to see you join our forum, and I hope you enjoy your time here!

I used to learn C++ programming, but I have to finish up this one (or two) books first, then I'll continue on my C++. Programming is very interesting.

Re: Introduce yourself!

Welcome to the board!

How long did you program for before your hiatus?
What other things do you like to do?

Cheers!
(Also, I'll be responding to your other post in a bit)
