Hello all!

I have been a member of for about 7 months now, and was asked to moderate there just over 2 months ago.

The reason I originally got into math was because I was teaching myself computer programming many years ago (before there was an internet!) and found I needed to understand a few things about geometry to successfully create graphics. I was fairly good at finding the formulas I needed by trial and error, but decided it would be nice to know what to do without guessing, and to do so efficiently.

I first used what was referred to as GW-BASIC which was bundled with MS-DOS (my first version was 2.0). It was an interpreter that used line numbers and GOTO (consult your history books to learn what those are). I soon realized I needed a compiler in order to do any graphics that looked reasonably smooth. Then I realized I needed a lower level language than QuickBasic, so I tried C, and eventually realized the way to go was assembler (MASM) and access the video hardware directly. Later C added the ability to embed assembler and that was the perfect combination of hardware access and ease of use.

As I got into my coursework, I soon realized I enjoyed the math for its own sake, and that became the main focus of my interest. It has been a long time since I have done any programming, but I am interested to see what has developed in the last 20 years.
