Which OS do you prefer between XP and Vista?

Personally, I think both of them are great. I saw some of the new features that Windows Vista offers in my laptop, but in overall, XP and Vista are all good.

XP is the lesser of two evils...
I could begin to list my problems with Windows, or I could continue using OSX and Redhat, and not be an elitist prig.

It's a tough decision

I don't think I have used OSX or Redhat OS before. How are they similar & different to Windows OS?

Re: Which OS do you prefer between XP and Vista?

On a graphical level, OSX is relatively similar to windows, with a few remapings and a slightly prettier (IMO) interface. Redhat is a linux distribution, so it can vary between almost identical to windows to nearly 100% different.

Other than that; Redhat is a linux distribution, maintained by Redhat Enterprise. It is essentially the well-supported, fully-tooled version of the Fedora core... which I think I'm going to replace Redhat with.
Linux is a the kernel of choice for the GNU project. It is an open source (freely distributed and freely modifiable) project started by Linus Torvalds. Linux has branched according to different philosophies at numerous points. Fedora and Redhat are part of the Debian family, which means they're related to Debian, Ubuntu, and a few others (Gentoo? Suse?)
The most important distinction between Debian systems and other linux distributions is package management. Debian systems use "apt-get" which accesses a central repository with numerous, easy to install packages (utilities, games, etc, etc, etc). You cans till use the standard Unix "gzip -args | tar -xf", "./configure", "make", "make install", but why do that when you can just "apt-get"?

OSX is built on the Darwin Kernel, which is an open source kernel based on FreeBSD. (OSX, of course, is not Open Source). Apple provides really great support, which is always a huge plus. Also, with macports (now darwinports?) mac has an apt-get type feature for GNU software.

Since most of my time on the computer is spent either with my terminal open, or online, I need a powerful shell. Not being able to SSH natively, not having VIM on install, not having the ability to write complicated, functional scripts, not having the GNU compiler, Apache, and a lot of other utilities with minimal effort (or at all) is a huge turn-off. Also, Windows was poorly kludged by a company with some questionable ethical practices, which means if I want power, I have to increase my specs, rather than hacking around to get things to work better.

If you're interested in getting into Linux, I would highly recommend Ubuntu... not that I actually like Ubuntu, but it's a great way to get started with Linux.
Of course, be very careful installing it on your current computer if this is your first Linux install... don't do anything that you're unsure about.
Also, Kubuntu will feel a little more like windows than regular Ubuntu.

Re: Which OS do you prefer between XP and Vista?

Visual: Vista < OS X < Windows XP -- the glowy, curvy, candy-interface was bad under XP but it's far worse in Vista. Vista went even beyond Macs in terms of "look but don't use". `Course I still use command prompts every day, whatever that says about my sensibilities...

Vista is far more secure than XP, but this is achieved only at the cost of usability, which I deplore. It will be much nicer for me to maintain an office of Vista-running PCs than it has been handling an office of XP boxes, but running it myself there's little advantage.

What happens if you like neither? I like Vista (as far as that goes), just not all the stuff that goes with it, like the new Microsoft Office junk. I especially can't stand the new Excel. However, I really haven't had much experience with Vista, since XP is what I use on all of my own computers.

Office 2007 runs on XP too, it's a whole different product. It's aggravating to learn the new interface but it's probably better once you're used to it. I'm using three spreadsheet programs on three different computers now -- Excel 2003, Excel 2007, and OOo Calc. Excel 2007 compares favorably with the others, IMO, though I hated it for the first 3 months or so.

I know I haven't been around for a while, but I just had to join in on the fun on this one. Honestly, I prefer XP over Vista, but I find both OS's way too restrictive. (Three guesses on which OS I prefer!)

hi.......

I love vista. I like the feel, and there isn't anything that I have found in the past year that is just completely wrong with it. I also like the ability to use the built in handwriting recognition in Vista, which is why I switched in the first place.

Re: Which OS do you prefer between XP and Vista?

I heard that the successor to Windows Vista is scheduled to come out pretty soon - somewhere around 2010-2011, can't remember exactly. I hope I won't have to switch to Vista by then ...

Windows 7 should be out no later than 2010, and possibly as soon as late 2009. Its interface should be similar to Vista, though, other than the new toolbar/dock/taskbar.
