Have you attempted to write an OS

How many here have tried to write an OS not necessarily successful but at least attempted to?

Not I, but I'll be taking an OS class within the next year or two...

Any specific reason, or are you just curious in general?

I am curious. Also I'm gonna try to write a very simple one.

Re: Have you attempted to write an OS

Isn't writing an OS one of the greatest challenges in computer programming?

It is not trivial but I don't plan on making a full fledged OS just something really small.

Not nearly. I've never written one, but I'd expect anyone with a degree in computer science to have done this. Surely anyone with a masters in computer science should have written at least one small operating system. Heck, had I more time in college I might have done this, even as a non-CS (math) major!

Re: Have you attempted to write an OS

I guess that writing a fully-fledged operating system would require to know quite a bit about computer hardware ...

Like CRGreathouse stated, it is not uncommon that someone with a computer science degree will write at least a simple OS.

Re: Have you attempted to write an OS

Some parts of it you need to write in assembly (boot loader at least, unless you just borrow an open source one). Most of the rest you can write in whichever compiled langauge you want to use.

You need to learn about file systems, direct hardware communication, writing rudimentary drivers for your hardware, how OSes deal with hardware and software interupts, and though your single running application doesn't make it strictly necessary you probably should at least think about ways to do memory management and process scheduling.

To create an OS, you need lots of knowledge, patience and... free time.
In my opinion, the last one is very hard to find these days.
