What do you think?

We are discussing theories and not solid examples to prevent any arguments of which OS is best as everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

An Operating System as the translator/ interface between the user and the hardware.
Operating Systems are reputably the most important software in a a desktop or laptop.
The Operating System must be capable of executing programs and user commands.

Modern OS's come from several predecessors:
Batch
Time Sharing
Personal
Network OS
Embedded
Small Computer

Services include:
Kernel
Shell
GUI
CLI(command line interpreter)
File Management
fragmentation, compaction
I/O Services
Process Control
Scheduling
high-level scheduler
dispatcher
CPU and I/O bound processes
preemptive and non-preemptive scheduling
secondary storage management
security

This is an open discussion so please post opinions and any questions...
