Windows OS is used more than Linux & Unix why?

Linux is superior then windows.
It is safer. Linux administers data much better then what windows so and hence saves on a lot of Mbs then why do people still utilize windows?
If I am right about 85% people worldwide use windows.
Why even that windows is not free and Linux is free.

They don't have the same business model, and I believe it's safe to assume that Linux "sales" (the services sold around Linux) bring in far less money than Windows sales do. This also means more marketing and negotiation power for Microsoft, which can penetrate the market much more than Linux.
Another argument would be, I believe, that Linux is a little more difficult to use for the beginner.

And while that argument might have been justified years ago when linux was most of the time hard to configure out of the box and had slightly akward GUIs, this is simply not the case anymore. I was helping someone build their computer the other day with a dual-boot linux(ubuntu)/windows 7 system. Linux was able to auto configure and have eveything setup out of the box, aside from the printer (but just by going through the add new printer dialog, drivers were auto-configured from there). Windows did not. Not to mention Linux installs in about half the time.

Well right, but you have to account for the fact that we belong to the "techie" generation (born with computers). If you drop two computers to your average 80 year-old, one equiped with Linux, the other with Windows 7, which one do you believe will be easier to use ? Maybe Linux depending on the Linux version, I'm not sure, but intuitively I'd still think Windows 7.

Devil's Advocate speaking:

If I dropped a computer in front of your average 80-year old, I don't think it would matter which operating system it had. They would complain about how much simpler life was back in their day anyway.

Windows is often use because it already establish a good name and its very user friendly. Even a 5 year old kid can already access or navigate this OS.

Here is why Windows is more used than Linux and unix.
(1) Installing programs is easy with windows because there is a standard.
(2) Anytime you try to install or change something on your own computer you have to type a password. And god forbid you run the program in root, then you get every warning that exists. (3) Installing anything good in Linux requires an entire weekend ending up in learning how to reinvent the wheel.
(4) To truly use any Linux distribution your going to have to either take classes in how Linux works or spend time reading a lot of books and forums.

Hi Nirav,

I agree with you on the fact that every time one wants to install a Linux program, one potentially must learn about Linux for hours before managing the install ... I find it nonetheless useful: better learn gradually than in a rush; I kind of regret spending all these years on windows (95, XP and 7) only ... I believe I would have learned much more on a Linux environment.

Superior depends on a measure (a metric). If what you want is a system that is fast and easy to understand then lynx wins. If you want a system that is easy for beginners to use and has a lot of features right out of the box then windows wins.

That sounds nice. I haven't booted a computer I own with lynix ever. Part of what scares me is all the systems (e.g. wireless cards) won't work but if this isn't an issue maybe I'll give it a try on a netbook someday. I have though used ubtuna though vmware player and played a bit with cygwin.

You may have noticed that most hosting companies use Linux or Unix ... Windows hosting plans are usually more expensive than Unix-based plans.
