SEO Myths.

Myth 1: You should submit your URLs to search engines. This may have helped once upon a time, but itís been at least 5 or 6 years since thatís been necessary.

Myth 2: You need a Google Sitemap. If your site was built correctly, i.e., itís crawler-friendly, you certainly donít need a Google Sitemap. It wonít hurt you to have one, and you may be interested in Googleís other Webmaster Central Tools, but having a Google Sitemap isnít going to get you ranked better.

Myth 3: You need to update your site frequently. Frequent updates to your pages may increase the search engine crawl rate, but it wonít increase your rankings. If your site doesnít need to change, donít change it just because you think the search engines will like it better. They wonít. In fact, some of the highest ranking sites in Google havenít been touched in years.

Myth 4: PPC ads will help/hurt rankings. This one is funny to me because about half the people who think that running Google AdWords will affect their organic rankings believe that they will bring them down; the other half believe they will bring them up. That alone should tell you that neither is true!

Myth 5: Your site will be banned if you ignore Googleís guidelines. Thereís nothing in Googleís webmaster guidelines that isnít common sense. You can read them if youíd like, but itís not mandatory in order to be an SEO. Just donít do anything strictly for search engines that you wouldnít do anyway, and youíll be fine. That said, the Google guidelines are much better than they used to be, and may even provide you with a few good tidbits of advice.

Re: SEO Myths.

In Internet marketing, there are tons of myths and they're almost like a plague. Unfortunately, many new marketers hear these myths and take them as gospel.

That's why it's important to read about search engine optimization from various sources before taking actions that could potentially ruin a website's rankings

Re: SEO Myths.

I think one of the greatest myths is that Goog is far more knowing, powerful, watchful and punishing than they actually are. There is so much FEAR and PARANOIA spread about that makes SEO's feel like they're tip-toeing on thin ice. Here's some TRUTHS. There are BILLIONS of web pages and umpteen MILLION domains currently live. Goog (more accurately it's BOTS) can BARELY keep up. They don't love or hate or mistrust your site - they're too busy and overloaded - scrambling to keep atop of what's out there. They either like your keywords or they don't - and then move on. They see a blend of Authority and Garbage links (actually a mix of both) pointing to and from your site. Maybe a bunch maybe a few - and then move on. To think that Goog is ready to pounce, hurt, damage, or ban your site for doing (or not doing) X, Y, Z is to give them more power over you than they have - or deserve.

Re: SEO Myths.

Google is taking action against those who artificially boost their organic rankings via keywords manipulation. Have a look at these recent news:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/13/busin ... technology
Of course, they probably won't take action against the small SEO players and rather improve their ranking algorithms accordingly, but when the SEO fraud is big enough they'll take manual action.

Google guidelines are very important and avoid things which Google has prohibited.

Re: SEO Myths.

It does sound like a common sense but there are still people out there who are doing it wrong and keep those myths alive
