Battling Malware

I don't have an antivirus program. Instead, I just battle all my malware manually (although I am in the process of making an antivirus program). Does anyone have any experience with removing malware on their own?

Re: Battling Malware

I've never removed malware on my own ... I believe this is indeed very difficult for several reasons. First, you never know which parts of your computer (files, registries) were affected by the malicious program. In order to know that, you must be able to decompile the program (and sometimes this can be unsufficient because some malware can undergo mutations).
Writing an antivirus program is I believe a difficult task, but can be very interesting ... out of curiosity, where are you going to import your initial list of known viruses signatures from ?

Re: Battling Malware

Detecting and removing malware is not as hard as it sounds. Most viruses have hidden files in the system32, Application Data, or temp directories. When you use the dir command with the /ah switch (in Windows), it finds hidden files in a folder. I also check the Run registry keys and the process list and Google something suspicious.

About the virus listings: Prevx has a huge database of malware files, and Symantec has a large listing of threats. When I combine the two, I can get pretty accurate results. I'm working on importing the database (or at least most of it) from Prevx.

What viruses have you dealt with?

Re: Battling Malware

At the time when i was studying a little assembling language I had a look at the first basic viruses and at Melissa (which was written in vbs , if I remember correctly) but really I've never undertaken the programming of an anti-virus or anti-spyware ...
