Indexing tables in a mysql database: autoincrement or not ?

When building tables in a database, is it generally a good idea to index them using the autoincrement option or should we rather manually index the records ?
One drawback of autoincrement is that there's no way to insert records "in between" two consecutive records that were already indexed. On the other hand, if no autoincrement is used and records are indexed with "gaps" between them (eg. first record is 10, second record is 20, etc ... allowing for unused numbers for possible later use), then I guess this must impact performance ?
